Philippines Missions Trip - Day 6 Group 2 (Sunday in the Panay Islands) Bookmark and Share

It’s 8:30am and we are off to Bethel Baptist Church in Anhawan, Janiway, Iloilo. This church is pastored by Jaireh Mamon. Pastor Mamon was attending a church service in a church pastored by his brother. After the musical play that was shown that night, a man attacked Bro. Jaireh and stabbed him 6 times. This incident was instrumental in getting Bro. Jaireh to surrender to full-time service.

Pastor Jaireh Mamon pastors two churches. North Valley Baptist Church is helping him with the construction of one of his church buildings.

The drive to Bethel Baptist church took about one and a half hours. The first half of the journey was through decent roads. The second half of the journey was a different story. How our vehicle managed to go through these rough roads is a testament to its durability. Since the roads were so rough, our host Bro. Art, arranged for us to have some escort so that in the event of a breakdown, we would not be stranded. Bro. Martin is always very thoughtful of our safety while travelling and we are very appreciative of that fact.

We had to walk the last half-mile uphill to where the church was located. The people in our group took it all in stride.

The church building was full for the service. The ladies sang a couple of specials at the request of the pastor. Bro. Apusen preached a message from Proverbs 11:30 on the Wisdom of Soulwinning.

After the service was over, the lady who donated the land where the church stands, invited us over for lunch at her house. It was a delicious meal of fried chicken, rice, mangoes and other goodies. The ladies were introduced to the proper way of eating sugar cane. It would be similar to chewing on a stick. The drive back to the hotel was uneventful but tiring. It’s amazing how those bumpy roads take a lot out of you. We arrived back at the hotel around 1:30pm to get some rest and do some shopping for necessities before heading to IBC for the evening service.

The service started just a little bit later than usual to allow people to make it to church due to the heavy rains that fell right before the service. Bro. Sam Gomez was asked to lead the IBC welcome song and did a good job. Bro. Apusen preached about a Recipe for Disaster based on the life of the Apostle Peter. In spite of the rains, there were still scores of visitors who attended the evening service and many of these got saved during the invitation. The ladies in our group closed out the service with a special number. They did a fine job singing.

We are scheduled to leave for Bacolod tomorrow morning at 5:15am so we headed back to the hotel after a brief stay at the Martins after the service for dinner.
